Description

British historian David Irving scripted this two-hour video special, based on his famous book Hitler’s War. Researching, writing, and revising this book, he spent many years privately interviewing members of Hitler’ staff and his generals. When it appeared in 1977, it was an instant best-seller. This film version was broadcast many times on PBS in North America, and in countries around the world including Israel.

Writing in The Times Literary Supplement in 1980, Sir John Keegan proclaimed: “Two books in English stand out from the vast literature of the Second World War. Chester Wilmot’s The Struggle for Europe, published in 1952, and David Irving’s Hitler’s War.”

The book provides a view of the war from behind Hitler’s desk. Much that was inexplicable becomes clear when seen from the vantage point of the man at whose finger tips were all the Intelligence reports, the wiretaps, and the codebreaking, and who commanded what was at the time the mightiest army on earth. But then things began to go wrong. . .

Brilliantly combining Irving’s script with the film and newsreel footage of the time, the skilled Edinburgh film company Lamancha closely collaborated with the author in the production of this film.
